Sioux Co. SWCD Celebrates 75 Years
The Sioux County Soil & Water Conservation District is Celebrating Their 75th Anniversary!
In 1949, 73 Sioux County farmers petitioned and requested a hearing with the state to form a local conservation district. Albert Ramaker, William Pennings, and Ed Schmidt presented their application to the state and the soil conservation district officially became a governmental subdivision of the state. Albert, William, and Ed served as the county’s first commissioners.
A History of Working With Community
Over the past 75 years, the conservation district has worked with numerous landowners and residents to promote conservation throughout the county to reduce soil loss, improve water quality, and educate the public. The district has assisted with the implementation of miles of terraces, acres of grassed waterways, and numerous farm and field windbreaks. They have participated in various outreach activities by sponsoring scholarships for local high school students and environmental grants for community groups and students, offering a free tree to every 3rd grader, hosting an outdoor classroom for local 5th and 6th graders, and much more.
